KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat has unanimously approved a motion tabled by the Prime Minister condemning the "inhumane, uncivilised, violent and irresponsible" action of shooting down Malaysia Airline flight MH17.
The motion, tabled during a special Parliamentary meeting Wednesday, also urged for a comprehensive investigation into the crash, to be undertaken by an international body.
In a strongly-worded motion, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak called on all parties to cooperate and ensure investigations are completed as soon as possible.
"The august House also demands that a comprehensive investigation be carried out so that those responsible for this crime against humanity through the shooting down of MH17 are immediately brought to justice," said Najib in the Dewan, leading to loud approval from the Members of Parliament.
A sombre-looking Najib, dressed in a grey suit, said the action resulted in the loss of 298 innocent lives. There were 43 Malaysians on board, including 15 crew members and two infants.
The House also extended its deepest regrets, profound sadness and sorrow at the unfortunate tragedy that befell the passengers and crew members.
Prior to the tabling of the motion, Dewan Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia called for a minute of prayer in remembrance of the 298 victims.
Najib later repeated the call when presenting the motion.
He said the Government had directed the Attorney-General to study the incident in detail and to ensure any action that would potentially be taken against parties responsible for the tragedy was in line with international law.
"However, at this point in time, we are not pointing fingers at any parties until validated proof is obtained," he stressed.
Najib also expressed anger and disappointment that the crash site was not immediately secured according to international practices, leading to the evidence being lost or tainted.
"The delay in handling the tragedy has also led to the failure in protecting the dignity of the remains of the deceased," he said.
Najib called on the International Civil Aviation Organisation (Icao), as the party responsible for global aviation safety, to condemn the incident.
He said there were many questions that remain unanswered, such as if the plane was brought down by a guided missile, who gave the order, who supplied the weapons and their true motives.
"To the families of the victims of the MH17 tragedy, do not worry. As long as answers are not found, we will not stop seeking the truth. No matter how difficult, justice will be sought for the families," he said, and called on the nation to unite in grief in these trying times.
"Let us walk through this difficult time together, united in sorrow." said Najib.
"Although shrouded in extreme sadness, let us not also forget the ill fate that is befalling our brethren, the Palestinians in Gaza who have lost many innocent lives due to oppression and cruelty. We urge for an immediate ceasefire (in the region)," he added.
